VA Grant Goes to Massachusetts State Veterans Home

April 27, 2004

WASHINGTON – Residents of the Soldiers' Home in Chelsea will have a modern fire safety system, thanks to a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

"This grant reflects the federal-state partnership that is honoring our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.  "This partnership provides a comfortable home for veterans in a time of great personal need."

The $6.9 million grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to install a fire safety alarm system in the state-run nursing home for veterans.  The overall cost of the project is approximately $10.7 million.

In fiscal year 2002, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) spent nearly $1.2 billion in Massachusetts to serve over 524,000 state veterans.  VA operates major medical centers in Bedford, Boston, Brockton, Northampton and West Roxbury with nearly 87,000 veterans receiving treatment.

Information about the Soldiers' Home in Chelsea can be obtained by calling 617-884-5660.
