VA Approves $18 Million for South Carolina State Veterans Home

September 29, 2003

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs has conditionally approved a grant for $18.6 million to South Carolina to construct a new state veterans home in Walterboro.

"I'm grateful for President Bush's support in ensuring that veterans receive the respect and care they have earned," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.  "This grant reflects the federal-state partnership which is honoring that commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform."

Before receiving the grant, which will pay up to 65 percent of the cost of the new facility, the state has agreed to meet certain federal requirements within 180 days.  The overall cost of the project, which includes a 220-bed nursing home and a 60-bed domiciliary, is approximately $28.6 million.

South Carolina currently operates two state veterans nursing homes -- the E. Roy Stone Jr., Pavilion, which is located in Columbia, and the Richard Michael Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson, S.C.

Admission to these facilities is limited to veterans who have been separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions, who qualify as South Carolina residents and who need skilled or intermediate nursing home care.  To apply for admission, contact the Department of Mental Health at (803) 737-5441 or 737-5282.
