WASHINGTON – The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has donated $110,000 to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to support diabetes research and a national veterans museum.
James N. Goldsmith, VFW Commander in Chief, presented the donation to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi during VFW’s national convention in Nashville, Tenn., on August 28. The money will support diabetes research at four VA facilities and the construction of a veterans museum at VA’s Washington headquarters.
In accepting the donation, Principi said, “This is a perfect example of the dedication to serving veterans that VFW has shown for more than a century. The additional diabetes research this donation makes possible will allow VA to expand its efforts to find treatments for one of the most debilitating diseases affecting veterans.”
The donation provides $25,000 each to VA research facilities in Brockton, Mass., Nashville, Tenn., Seattle and Detroit. Principi said the $10,000 museum donation will be used to construct a veterans museum that “pays tribute to the sacrifices and accomplishments of 48 million of our fellow citizens from the earliest days of the Republic.”
