VA Plans to Issue W-2s Early

January 11, 2002

WASHINGTON  – The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to issue W-2s to current and former employees no later than January 20.  This is well ahead of the January 31 deadline established by the Internal Revenue Service.

Form W-2, Wage And Tax Statement, is necessary for calculating individual income taxes.  It lists total pay, along with withholdings for federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare.

“Several benefits in recent years have increased the complexity of W-2s, notably pre-tax health, transit subsidy and child care subsidy,” said Rodney W. Wood, director of VA's Financial Services Center in Austin, Texas. “But we're determined to provide W-2s well before the deadline."

The new W-2s will be mailed to former VA employees, while most current employees will have the forms delivered to them at work.  Last year, the Austin Center processed W-2s for 257,254 current and former VA employees.
