Commission To Seek New VA Under Secretary For Health

June 7, 2001

Washington -- Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi today announced formation of a nine-member search commission to recommend candidates for a new Under Secretary for Health for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

VA's Under Secretary for Health directs more than 200,000 full- and part-time employees -- including 80,000 direct care providers -- in one of the largest health care systems in the world.  VA offers care at more than 1,300 sites to nearly 5 million veterans currently enrolled in the VA health care program.

The search committee is replacing Dr. Thomas L. Garthwaite, who recently announced his intention to resign.

"I thank Tom Garthwaite for his years of dedication to veterans.  Along with his colleagues at VA and friends throughout the veterans community, I wish him the best for the future," said Principi.

In announcing his intention to resign May 15, Garthwaite said, " I . . . believe the time has come for me to seek other opportunities in health care -- a little closer to the patient."  Principi asked Garthwaite to remain in his post until a replacement is found, which could take several months.  Garthwaite has agreed.

Under a formula dictated by law, the search commission's composition reflects interests in such areas as clinical care, research and education.

"We are seeking a proven physician-leader with strong managerial and clinical skills, plus a strong commitment to veterans and to the Department’s core mission, who will help VA navigate the rapid changes taking places in American medicine,” Principi said.  “Our goal is to build upon our past successes with leading-edge programs to enhance quality and effectiveness of care."

The position of Under Secretary for Health is a presidential appointment for a term of four years subject to Senate confirmation.  Under federal law, the search commission must recommend at least three candidates.  The Secretary of Veterans Affairs will forward the list to the President along with any comments by the Secretary.
