WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today awarded $940,000 to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for repairs to the Soldier's Home in Chelsea.
"This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform," said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. "Our federal-state partnership helps to provide a comfortable home for some Massachusetts veterans."
The $940,000 grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost of repairing the roof of the NorthBuilding at the Chelsea facility. Overall cost of the project is $1.4 million.
Earlier this year, VA awarded the Commonwealth $8.3 million for improvements to the Soldier's Home in Holyoke.
Last year, VA spent more than $1.3 billion in Massachusetts to serve about 495,000 veterans who live in the Commonwealth. VA operates major medical centers in Bedford, Boston, Brockton, Northampton and West Roxbury, with outpatient clinics and Vet Centers at locations throughout Massachusetts.
