Researchers and archaeologists from Alaska's Office of History and Archaeology, NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program, and the University of Alaska - Fairbanks teamed up to collect information on Alaska's most famous shipwrecks. The team deployed high frequency sonar to collect information on the two submerged wreck sites of the PRINCESS KATHLEEN and the CLARA NEVADA, which is the former survey vessel HASSLER.

Scientist-explorers from 14 nations, led by Chief Scientist Peter Wiebe from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, set off for the rarely explored tropical ocean depths between the southeast U.S. coast and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge on a quest to identify zooplankton. The cruise was part of a global inventory of zooplankton expected to be completed by 2010.

Engineers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Deep Submergence Lab are developing a hybrid remotely operated vehicle, or HROV, that will be able to travel to 35,000 feet (11,000 meters) deep to the bottom of the ocean. The hybrid, Nereus, is a new class of undersea systems that will be able to change from ROV to AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) as mission requirements change.

On September 25, 2008, doors will open to the 23,000 square-foot Ocean Hall. Ocean Hall is the cornerstone of the Smithsonian's Ocean Initiative, which is designed to increase public awareness of the importance of the world's ocean to all life.
