The City of Moss Point, Mississippi and the NOAA Restoration Center hosted a celebration of success for the Pelican Landing Shoreline Restoration Project on October 17, 2003. NOAA’s Community-based Restoration Program, EPA's Five-Star Program, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation awarded a grant to the City of Moss Point to restore approximately 3.5 acres of wetland habitat along the shoreline. Vice Admiral Lautenbacher personally congratulated the City on the success of the project and Bryon Griffith, Acting Director of the EPA Gulf of Mexico Program, officially designated the project as a Five-Star Restoration site. Once laced with junk cars and dilapidated buildings, Pelican Landing now hosts a 12,000 square foot conference center and nearly 1,000 native grasses, trees, and shrubs. The restoration effort enhanced ecological functions by restoring the shoreline with native vegetation in place of a hard cement bulkhead. The natural shoreline provides erosion control, wildlife shelter, and fisheries habitat, a better option than an expensive bulkhead that offers little habitat value. With the help of local volunteers and students, and funds from federal and state agencies, the City was able to realize its vision ofenvironmental stewardship and economic growth.
