The Many Faces of Coastal Issues

A pelican

The Eastern Brown Pelican is endangered in many areas due to habitat destruction and other factors, including human disturbance of nesting colonies and injuries from marine debris. The birds are often caught on fish hooks and subsequently entangled in monofilament line.

Balancing ecosystem health with human use is a challenging task.  U.S. coastal areas are some of our most diverse and well-loved environments.  From recreation areas and no-take reserves to resource extraction and urban development our coasts are busy areas.

Governments at all levels—Federal, state and local—are actively pursuing and implementing regulations, policies and management strategies to ensure the long-term viability of our coasts and oceans.
