Managing Our Coastlines: A Continuous Effort

OCRM and state and local governments are working together under the Coastal Zone Management Act to ensure that Americans can visit the nation's beaches and coastlines.

Did you know that literally 100s of millions of people visit U.S. coastlines each year?  Coastal economies generate billions in revenue for the nation.  Maintaining these economic benefits requires maintaining healthy coastal and ocean environments.

Managing our coasts, in concert with state and local governments, is the business of NOAA’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management.  Some of our initiatives are directed by Congress, like Coastal Program Enhancements activities.  Other programs we initiate directly in response to state coastal managers’ requests, like the shoreline management technical assistance toolbox.
