Army veteran Robert Dunning's World War II memoir, written in 1991 from extensive notes he kept over the years, details his service and attempts to reach some understanding of why he felt compelled, after 45 years, to revisit that time in his life. Dunning's father, a veteran of World War I and an officer in the Massachusetts National Guard, instilled in his son from an early age a love for the military. The younger Dunning made many friends during his wartime service, but he came to have mixed feelings about reunions with his buddies.
