For reasons for working on a degree, preparing for further education and expected by employer are lumped with 'other'. The following variables were combined to derive a 1-digit code:

Reason for taking courses during reference week: Prepare for grad school/further education (N_ED_REF_WK_ENROLL_REAS_PREP_GRAD_SCHL), and
Reason for taking courses during reference week: Required/expected by employer (N_ED_REF_WK_ENROLL_REAS_EMPR_REQ), and
Reason for taking courses during reference week: Other (N_ED_REF_WK_ENROLL_REAS_OTHR).

• the last position, position six, may or may not be used; if used, it contains a character to flag certain situations
