Recreation

Photo of a family gathered around a campfire roasting marshmallows. Their tent is in the background. The recreation opportunities in the Pike, San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron, Comanche National Grasslands are countless. Visitors can visit ghost towns or backpack for miles on the Colorado or Continental Divide Trails. The terrain provides challenges for beginners and experts alike. Fishing, hiking, kayaking, rafting, mountain biking and four-wheel driving are only a few of the activities accessible in the mountains, valleys and canyons of the Pike San Isabel National Forests.

The Pike National Forest encompasses over one million acres of land in south central Colorado. This region includes 14,000 foot mountains, gold-medal fishing streams, wilderness areas, campgrounds, scenic byways, ski resorts and hundreds of miles of trails.

The San Isabel National Forest consists of over one million acres of mountains, rivers, canyons and meadows. The forest is bounded on the west and north by the Continental Divide and on the east by the Pike National Forest.

The Comanche and Cimarron Grasslands provide access to some remote backcountry that promises interesting geological, historical and cultural sites. Reminders of ancient life that existed in the area, both reptilian and Homo sapiens, pervade the grassland. Solitude is guaranteed in most areas of the grasslands.

Several areas of the grasslands are open for various recreational uses. Hiking, mountain biking, educational activities, viewing historical sites, scenic driving, horseback riding and picnicking are among the recreation opportunities to be enjoyed in the region.

OHVs and Hunting

The use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) during hunting season has skyrocketed in recent years. ATVs offer several advantages -- they are easier than walking, they cause less impact than most other vehicles, they can access ATV trails that would turn back full-size vehicles, and carrying an elk out on the back of an ATV is easier than carrying it out on foot.

Recreation Residence Permits

Recreation Facility Analysis

This process was called Recreation Site-Facility Master Planning (RS-FMP.) However, the Forest Service recognized, as a result of the findings of a team chartered specifically to review the public participation efforts associated with this analysis process, that the term “master planning” could imply that this is a decision-making process as opposed to an analytic one. Therefore, based on a recommendation from that team, the Forest Service decided to refer to the analysis of recreation facilities more accurately and simply as Recreation Facility Analysis.

Reservations & Rentals

While many campgrounds are on a first-come basis, you can use the National Recreation Reservation Service to make reservations for some campgrounds.

Some areas have cabins and fire-lookout towers available for rental.
