NEW! Official news release on the lynx admendment.

The Forest Service has amended eight Land and Resource Management Plans in the Southern Rockies to adopt conservation measures for Canada lynx, a threatened species. The proposed amendment affects the following National Forests:

Colorado:

  • Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests
  • Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests
  • Pike and San Isabel National Forests
  • Rio Grande National Forest
  • Routt National Forest
  • San Juan National Forest
  • White River National Forest

Wyoming

  • Medicine Bow National Forest

During the spring of 2000, we laid out the changes we propose to make for lynx conservation in the Federal Register and in news stories. After taking comments on the lynx amendment proposal, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was prepared and released for public comment on January 30, 2004. Issues being addressed through the Southern Rockies Amendment include the following:

  • Lynx productivity, mortality and movements;
  • Public safety and property protection; and
  • Human uses.

On December 2, 2004 USDA Deputy Undersecretary for Natural Resources and Environment David Tenny issued his Final Discretionary Review Decision for the White River National Forest. Within this decision was direction to include the White River National Forest in the Southern Rockies Lynx amendment process. The Revised Notice of Intent to incorporate the White River National Forest in the Southern Rockies Lynx amendment process was published on December 30, 2004.

A supplemental draft EIS document was released for another public comment on November 24, 2006.

The final EIS and Record of Decision were completed in October 2008 and will go into effect in mid November 2008.
