James Polk's Twenty-five
Volume Diary
|
When James K. Polk was inaugurated president on March 4, 1845,
the U.S. was on the verge of war with Mexico because of the U.S.
annexation of Texas. His twenty-five volume diary represents one
of the earliest efforts of a president to preserve a daily record
of his presidency. This passage refers to Nathan Clifford, named
attorney general by Polk in 1846, who arranged the Treaty of Guadaloupe
Hidalgo which ended the Mexican war in 1848.
