This manuscript map was executed a month after the first Battle
of Bull Run, called "First Manassas" by the victorious Confederates.
It was a jarring setback for the North and for the widespread
belief that the price of war would be slight. Through the use
of a profile, the draftsman demonstrates that the height of the
corn, the depth of the creek, and other features of the site influenced
the course of the battle.
