DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Aloha!
As Director of the Department of Human Services (DHS), I hope the information on this Web site gives you a better idea of how we serve Hawai`i’s most vulnerable and needy populations. The core of our mission is helping people get back on their feet and stay there.
Our committed staff strive each day to provide timely, efficient and effective programs, services and benefits that empower our customers. By doing so, we expand their capacity for self-sufficiency, healthy choices, independence, self-determination, quality of life and personal dignity.
One of the State’s largest departments, DHS has a budget of more than $1.7 billion for the 2007 fiscal year and a customer base numbering thousands of people. DHS oversees programs that help keep families intact by facilitating access to critical social services such as financial assistance, healthcare, nutrition and housing. We are also responsible for programs that protect children and vulnerable adults, rehabilitate troubled youth and empower our customers to return to the workforce.
I want to thank all the DHS employees who work so hard to reach the high goals that we set for ourselves. We will always continue to raise the bar when it comes to public service.
