BIOSIS
now available through SearchPlus
BIOSIS is now in SearchPlus, the Research
Library's cross-database search interface. BIOSIS is the leading life sciences
database, covering biological and biomedical sciences, botany, biochemistry,
biophysics, biotechnology, medicine, public health, radiation biology, ecology
and the environment from 1969 to present. BIOSIS indexes 5,000 journals from
all over the world, 1500 meetings, books, reviews, and U.S. patents. The database
offers extensive indexing with controlled vocabulary for accuracy and consistency
in searching, MESH terminology, and CAS registry numbers.
You can be notified of new literature in a field, or by a particular author
or in a particular journal, by saving a search as an alert. In SearchPlus you
can set an alert for just BIOSIS, or to be run against all the databases in SearchPlus,
picking up cross-disciplinary references.
SearchPlus is a key resource for accessing and using scholarly literature.
Its combined databases offer LANL users access to 50 million records, with tools
for setting personal preferences, outputting search results, and keeping up-to-date
with alerts. Email your questions and comments on SearchPlus to rl-testing@lanl.gov.

ANSI Z136.1 - Safe Use of Lasers -
now available online
The
Research Library has negotiated a license agreement for LANL site-wide access
to the electronic version of ANSI Z136.1, Safe Use of Lasers. The document is
available for Laboratory employees from a Library web page at http://rlcd.lanl.gov/ansi/z136.1/.
ANSI Z136.1 is the basis for LIR 402-400-01.3, provides laser safety
information and is designed to assist laser users in developing laser safety
programs. ANSI Z136.1 provides information on laser classifications, hazard analysis
and control measures needed for the development of a comprehensive laser program.
ANSI Z136.1-2000 is the latest version of the Safe Use of Lasers standard. However,
an updated version will be released in November 2004 that will also be available
from the Research Library web site. You can sign up for notification of
the release of the 2004 version at the Laser
Institute of America websites

Resumption resources: Locating safety
and security information
With the recent emphasis on safety and security at LANL, the Research Library's Resumption
Resources web page with safety and security resources has proved popular,
and we continue to update it with new information. More links to LANL resources,
official documents (LIRs, LIGs) and standards have been added. More books and
articles have been added — follow the link to books, articles and journals
on a separate page.
Library users can also search specific topics in library-supplied databases.
Consider using some of the following terms or phrases as part of your search
strategy. This list is not intended to be comprehensive but may give you ideas
of ways to search. For assistance in constructing online search strategies, contact
the LANL Research Library at 7-5809 or send email.

Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists now
available back to 1945 online!
The
Research Library is proud to announce that Los Alamos National Laboratory is
the first subscriber, worldwide, for the online
archive issues of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The Bulletin
of the Atomic Scientists, founded by a group of World War II-era Manhattan
Project scientists, has warned the world of nuclear dangers since 1945.
The Bulletin archive contains more than 18,000 articles forming an
archive of primary source material that is recognized internationally as an indispensable
resource on international security issues.
You can search, browse, and download articles or entire issues in PDF format
and view them exactly as they appeared in print. This collection is continually
updated, featuring articles from 1945 to today.
The Bulletin is also famous as the keeper of the "Doomsday
Clock" and has told the world what time it is since 1947, when the clock
first appeared on its cover. Since then, the minute hand has moved both forward
and back, reflecting the global level of nuclear danger.

Cell Press announces recent archive
of ejournals now freely available
Cell Press, publisher of Cell, has announced that access to the recent online
archive of Cell and the other journals of the Cell Press collection will become
freely available beginning in January 2005. The recent archive of these journals
includes content that is 12 months old or older and back to 1995. Each month
as new issues are published, the year-old issues will be added to the freely
accessible recent archive. Free access to the recent archive will be available
on both ScienceDirect (www.sciencedirect.com) and on the Cell
Press journal sites (www.cellpress.com).
Access to current issues of Cell Press ejournals still requires an institutional
subscription. Current access is available from http://www.cellpress.com/.

Strong LANL presence at the 2004
Joint Conference on Digital Libraries
The Joint Conference on Digital Libraries is
a major international forum focusing on digital libraries and their associated
technical, practical, and social issues. This year the Research Library was not
only well represented, but won the "Best Poster Award" for the poster "Toolkits
for Visualizing Co-Authorship Graph,"
by Xiaoming Liu, Johan Bollen, Michael Nelson, Herbert Van de Sompel, Jeremy
Hussell, Rick Luce and Linn Marks.
LANL Prototype Team Leader Herbert Van de Sompel chaired the heavily
attended JCDL session on "Crawling the Web," which included papers on focused
crawling and topical crawlers. Van de Sompel was also co-author of a paper
presented at the session on "Repository Architectures." The paper titled, "The
Multifaceted Use of the OAI-PMH in the LANL Repository" was written by Henry
Jerez, Xiaoming Liu, Patrick Hochstenbach, and Van de Sompel.

Search engines: Search tools at Fagan
Finder
The Fagan Finder site at http://www.faganfinder.com contains
an amazing set of search tools. The 'Search Engine Ultimate Interface' allows
you to choose from nine search engines in the beta test site. The search features
alter with your choice of search engine. The site includes many other useful
tools and you may want to start with the site map to familiarize yourself with
this unusual site.
Also on Fagan Finder is a new and to me very unique tool -- the URLinfo resource
which allows you to investigate a site's URL in a variety of ways. You type the
URL into the "box" and directly under the box are a series of tabs that provide
information about the site. The tabs include topics such as: links--which provides
backlink information; track---which contains four sources that can monitor page
changes for you; blogs/feeds--about a dozen choices allow you to search the newest
information sources about the site; similar--finds related pages, etc. etc. Each
of the eleven tabs provides you with several sources to dig into and find more
information from a simple URL.
To follow up on a favorite URL you can use the Fagan Finder directions for
customized bookmarklets. I also recommend that you look at the 'speed-browse'
and take some time to scan the 'informational pages' that cover topics such as
topic clustering, popularity ranking and RSS/Atom Syndication.
