BTS Releases Special Accessibility Issue Of Journal of Transportation and Statistics

Thursday, May 16, 2002 -- The U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released a special issue of The Journal of Transportation and Statistics, focusing on new ways to evaluate and measure accessibility to transportation.

This issue of the Journal is designed to help advance research on transportation accessibility to support the planning process. Included are articles that address the conceptual issues in defining and measuring accessibility, the development of application tools and empirical examples of accessibility measures.

"With this special issue of the Journal, we hope to support the effort to develop high quality data for use by decision-makers and planners," said BTS Director Ashish Sen. "Our goal is to advance the research and discussion of measures of accessibility."

This edition (Vol. 4, Issue 2/3) contains:

  • Introduction to the Special Issue on Methodological Issues in Accessibility Measures with Possible Policy Implications by Piyushimita (Vonu) Thakuriah
  • Computational Tools for Measuring Space-Time Accessibility Within Dynamic Flow Transportation Networks by Yi-Hwa Wu and Harvey J. Miller
  • Accessibility: Concepts and Applications by Britton Harris
  • Performance of Accessibility Measures in Europe by Siamak Baradaran and Farideh Ramjerdi
  • Accessibility Improvements and Local Employment: An Empirical Analysis by Joseph Berechman and Robert Paaswell
  • Evaluating Neighborhood Accessibility: Possibilities and Practicalities by Susan L. Handy and Kelly J. Clifton
  • Path-Based Accessibility by Svante Berglund
