History of the National Weather Service in Gaylord, Michigan

The National Weather Service opened its North Central Lower Michigan Weather Forecast Office in Gaylord in September, 1995.  This office consolidated weather services provided by three other Michigan Weather Service offices for northern Lower Michigan:  WSO Sault Ste. Marie, WSO Alpena, and WSO Houghton Lake.

The timeline for creating the new forecast office went as follows:

September 29, 1994 - WFO North Central Lower Michigan groundbreaking at Gaylord

September, 1995 - Gaylord Forecast Office Opens

August 7, 1996 - WSR-88D Radar Commissioned

December 9, 1996 - WSR-74C Radars De-comissioned at Alpena and Houghton Lake

May 31, 1999 - WSCMO Offices at Alpena, Houghton Lake and Sault Ste. Marie close.
