Contractors completed the final phase of improvements to the Big Rock River Access on the Wild and Scenic Trinity River. "They installed two new shade structures, picnic tables, entrance sign, information kiosk and a new paved parking lot and boat launching area," stated Trish Clabaugh, Acting District Ranger for Lower Trinity Ranger District. "This river access receives year round use and provides recreation opportunities for rafting, kayaking, tubing, swimming, exercising and fishing. The site has long needed permanent facilities," according to Orleans and Lower Trinity Recreation Officer Bob Hemus.

"Thanks to a grant received from California Department of Boating and Waterways (DBOW), we were able to make improvements to this river access site for our many river users. DBOW has funded many site improvement projects on north coast rivers," stated Hemus. Grants and partnerships such as the one from DBOW and others are critical to accomplishing river access improvements. "With so many river recreation opportunities, we have been focusing efforts over the past ten years on river access improvements such as toilets, parking, signage, river safety and information bulletin boards, and road or trail access across the Forest," Hemus said.

Six Rivers National Forest manages 389 miles of six Wild and Scenic Rivers: Smith, Klamath, Trinity, Cal-Salmon, North Fork Eel, and Van Duzen. This represents over 35% of California’s Wild and Scenic Rivers managed by the Forest Service.
