Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council
Meets in Capitola on October 5th, 2001
The Monterey
Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) will meet on Friday,
October 5th, 2001, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Jade Street Community
Center (4400 Jade Street), in Capitola, CA. The SAC is scheduled to discuss
the Sanctuarys upcoming management plan review, and hear presentations
from the four Working Groups of the Advisory Council. They will comment
on NOAAs draft report Fair Market Value Analysis for a Fiber
Optic Cable Permit in National Marine Sanctuaries.
"The Advisory Council, and its working groups, are important tools
in getting citizens involved in the management of this Sanctuary,
said William J. Douros, Superintendent of the Monterey Bay National Marine
Sanctuary. At the upcoming meeting, the Advisory Council will hear
from our research, education, conservation and business/tourism working
groups regarding their issues of concern. In response to a SAC priority,
the Manager for Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary will present
information relative to their management plan review.
Advisory Council members will discuss and help define their role in the
upcoming management plan review, and get an update on the reserves working
group, a subcommittee of the Alliance of Communities for Sustainable Fisheries.
Other topics to be discussed include affirming SAC priorities for 2002,
and a SAC subcommittees recommendations concerning the National
Academy of Public Administration report on the National Marine Sanctuary
System.
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was established
by Federal law to assure continued public participation in the management
of the Sanctuary. Its nineteen voting members represent a variety of local
user groups, as well as the general public, plus seven local, state and
federal governmental jurisdictions. The meeting is open to the public.
