Monterey Bay Sanctuary Advisory Council Elects New Chairperson The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council recently elected Stephanie Harlan to serve as its chair for the next two years. The 19-member Council is comprised of private sector and government representatives that provide advice and recommendations to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, through the Sanctuary Superintendent, on issues affecting the 5,300 square mile Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The Council acts as a conduit, relaying the community's interests, concerns, and management needs to the Sanctuary's management. "I look forward to working closely with the members of the Sanctuary Advisory Council," said Stephanie Harlan, Chair, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. "The Council plays an important role in helping the Sanctuary staff protect the Sanctuary's resources while ensuring that the groups they represent have a voice in decisions that may affect them." Harlan has been an active member on the Sanctuary Advisory Council over the past year, representing the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments. She has chaired the Santa Cruz County Sanctuary Interagency Task Force since 1995, promoting the development of a Sanctuary interpretive coastal trail in Santa Cruz County. Harlan is an elected member of the Capitola City Council, a position held for 16 of the last 18 years. Two of these terms she served as mayor. "I welcome Stephanie's vision and enthusiasm in leading this Advisory Council over the next two years," says William J. Douros, Superintendent of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. "Her leadership on the Santa Cruz Interagency Task Force demonstrates that she supports creating innovative partnerships between the Sanctuary and local communities." The Council also elected Ed Brown, Vice President for Planning at the Pebble Beach Company, as its Secretary. Steve Abbott, Environmental Coordinator for Duke Energy's Moss Landing Power Plant, will continue to serve his remaining term as Vice Chair. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is one of 12 marine sanctuaries administered by the Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Sanctuary extends from southern Marin County to Cambria in San Luis Obispo County, encompassing 300 miles of shoreline and 5,322 square miles of ocean. This remarkably productive coastal environment is home to numerous marine mammals, seabirds, fish, invertebrates and plants.
