A tank blasts away at enemy positions while this infantry company of the 2nd Army watches. The 7th Infantry Division and the Marines attacked small islands in this atoll in order to establish staging points to assault the Japanese naval station at Truk (Chuuk). Kwajalein Island is a coral reef formation, in the shape of a crescent loop. It encloses the world's largest lagoon, approximately one-half by two and one-half miles. It is in the Pacific, due south of Wake Island and due east of the Caroline archipelego.
