Keep Mum - The World Has Ears Rooted in the French verb "to spy," espionage means using spies to discover the military and political secrets of another government. During World War II, civilian workers were reminded not to share any "harmless" information with other persons. Mum—a sound made through closed lips—was the word. The artist, Edward Grigware, played professional baseball as a young man before studying art. He was part of the Federal Arts Project sponsored by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
