In their dress uniforms, complete with rifles, these new troops are debarking from a Pullman car in an undated photograph. In a one year period, 1943 - 44, the Pullman Company produced 1200 "troop sleeper cars" for the war effort. Described as "boxcars with windows," these dormitories on wheels measured 51 feet long, 10 feet wide and 13 feet high. The height allowed a double row of bunk beds to be installed. The company also manufactured 440 "kitchen cars" to provide basic meals and many sandwiches to the traveling troops. Like other manufacturers, the Pullman Company converted its factories to win government contracts and they produced aircraft wings, marine patrol craft and medium landing ships.
