During the attack on Pearl Harbor, Seamen Third Class Dorie Miller, a ship's cook on the USS West Virginia, carried wounded shipmates to safety and then manned a .50 caliber anti-aircraft machine gun. Although he had not been trained on the weapon, Miller continued to fire it. One of the planes dived close enough to drop two bombs that pierced the armor of the battleship's deck and created severe damage below. The crew abandoned ship. About 12% were killed or wounded. Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism. While serving on the escort carrier, Liscome Bay, Miller was one of the 646 sailors who died when a Japanese torpedo sank that ship. In 1973, the Navy commissioned the Knox-class frigate, USS Miller.
