Biography:
Dr. Lawrence J. Rosenblum is Program Director for Graphics and Visualization. He is on leave from the Information Technology Division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) where for the past ten years he has been Director of Virtual Reality (VR) Systems and Research. His research group has produced advances in mobile augmented reality (AR), scientific and uncertainty visualization, VR displays, applications of VR/AR systems, and understanding human performance in graphics systems. During this time he also served part-time as Program Officer for Visualization and Graphics at the Office of Naval Research. He has published over eighty scientific articles and has edited two books, including Scientific Visualization: Advances & Challenges, L. Rosenblum et al. (eds), Academic Press Ltd., London, UK, 1994. Rosenblum has guest edited special issues/sections of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A), Computer, and Presence on visualization, VR, and AR. He received an NRL Alan Berman Research Publication Award for his work in the visualization of ocean hydrodynamics.

Rosenblum received his Ph.D. in mathematics from The Ohio State University. From 1992 to 1994, he was Liaison Scientist for Computer Science at the Office of Naval Research European Office, where his reports on European activities were widely disseminated. Prior to that, he held several positions at NRL. He is on the editorial boards of IEEE CG&A, where he edits the Projects in VR Department, and Virtual Reality. He also has served on both the editorial board and advisory board of the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. Rosenblum is a former chairman and current director of the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee. An early practitioner of visualization, he received an IEEE Outstanding Contribution Certificate for initiating and co-founding the IEEE Visualization Conference. Rosenblum serves on the program and conference Committees of numerous international conferences and is currently on the steering committee of the IEEE VR Conference. Recent activities include giving keynote talks at the Dutch IST Conference in 2003 and the Tenth Eurographics Symposium on Virtual Environments in 2004 and serving as Honorary Chairman of the IEEE VR 2005 Conference.

Rosenblum is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the IEEE Computer Society, ACM, and Siggraph.
