Volunteering

Volunteering for the Forest Service is a fun and rewarding way to learn new skills and experience the out-of-doors. It is also a great opportunity for you to help the Agency meet its mission of "Caring for the Land and Serving People" by bringing your knowledge, experience and abilities to enhance recreation and resource management programs.

If you are interested in volunteering, check out the opportunities at your local National Forest office (listed in this web site above under 'contact us'). After reviewing the projects available, decide which ones suit your interests and needs. As a volunteer, you determine when and where you'll work and the type of jobs you'll perform.

Next, call the contact person responsible for coordinating the project or work for which you are interested in volunteering. The names of contacts are available from any Forest Service personnel office. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions about specific project information. Let the contact know when you are available to volunteer and about any health problems or other considerations he or she should know prior to work. Once you've agreed to the specific terms for volunteering, your contact will send a volunteer agreement form to you for your signature.

That's all it takes! You will be expected to uphold your end of the agreement and arrive on time and prepared for the work you've agreed to perform. You can expect your experience to be challenging, rewarding and fun if you put forth the effort.

Colville National Forest Volunteer Opportunities

The Colville National Forest is nearly 1.1 million acres in size and encompasses three counties in northeastern Washington: Stevens, Ferry and Pend Oreille. The National Forest is responsible for managing and protecting this area to meet a variety of society's needs for recreation, wilderness, transportation, fish and wildlife habitat, clean water, livestock grazing and timber production. The Forest Service is also responsible for protecting habitats for rare, threatened and endangered wildlife and plant species, protecting historical and archeological resources, protecting forests from wildfire, insects and diseases, and helping the public to better understand and enjoy their natural environment.

The Colville National Forest employs volunteers to serve at its headquarters in Colville and at its five ranger districts at Newport, Colville, Sullivan Lake, Republic and Kettle Falls. Here, volunteers can find challenging work and unique educational experiences. Volunteers are important to the work accomplished by the Colville National Forest -- nearly 300 individuals perform volunteer work each year in this beautiful area.

Volunteers can work in many disciplines, at all times of the year. Each individual volunteer brings special insights and talents to the job . . . and the Forest Service benefits from that spirit of volunteerism. Most of all, the Colville National Forest needs volunteers who are enthusiastic, willing to work and who enjoy working outdoors and meeting people.
