Fire management on the Shawnee National Forest encompasses a variety of fire management tools. It includes wildland fire, prescribed burning, fire prevention and smoke management. By using these tools, protection of private land, management of the forest and air quality can be enhanced. In the past, fire has played a major role in shaping the Shawnee National Forest. This is evident in the abundant variety of both plant and animal species. Enjoy a tour through the many facets of fire management as described below.

Fire Status

The National Incident Information Center Morning Report is published daily during fire season and provides information on the current wildland fire situation, burned area rehabilitation activities and more.

Prescribed Burning

In addition to wildland fire suppression, fire is used in a variety of ways on the National Forest to meet management needs. 

Illinois Interagency Coordination Center

Illinois Interagency Dispatch Center coordinates the mobilization of available resources to meet anticipated and existing incidents, preparedness, severity, wildland and prescribed fire needs regardless of geographic location or agency affiliation.
