National Situation Update: Monday, March 10, 2008

Significant National Weather

South: 
Rain is forecast for many areas of the South today; heaviest rainfalls with isolated thunderstorms are expected for eastern and southern Texas.  Southeast Oklahoma, southwest Arkansas, southern Florida, and western and southern Louisiana are anticipating light to moderate rain Monday, March 10. 

Red Flag Warnings will be in effect from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. EDT Monday for the eastern Panhandle and Florida Big Bend areas due to long durations of relative humidity below 35 percent.

Temperatures will be near average for early March with highs ranging from the 50s in northwest Tennessee to the 80s in far south Texas; most of the Deep South should peak in the 60s.

West:
Light rain and mountain snow are expected in the Pacific Northwest and northwest California today as a Pacific cold front moves inland.  Snow is anticipated in higher elevations; around 6,000 or 7,000 feet with forecast of strong winds over coastal locations. 

High temperatures will be near or above seasonal averages, ranging from the 30s in the Rockies to the 80s in the lower Colorado River Valley and southwest Arizona.

Midwest: 
A weak upper-air disturbance moves eastward today, causing some light rain or snow around the eastern Great Lakes to Kentucky. 

Temperatures are expected to be near or below seasonal averages with highs ranging from the 30s in the Michigan Upper Peninsula to the 60s in southwest Nebraska and western Kansas.  High temperatures for the Great Lakes region will be in the 30s.

Northeast: 
New England will remain dry early in the week, while farther west occasional light rain and small snow showers are expected in western New York, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and far western Virginia. 

Temperatures are forecast to be near average, ranging from the 20s in most of upstate New York and northern New England to the low 60s in south central Virginia. (NWS, Media Sources)

Flood Warnings for Moderate Flooding Decrease:

Midwest:
Moderate river flooding is occurring and will continue for the Illinois River at Havana and Beardstown, Illinois; water levels will continue to decrease slowly. A Flood Warning is in effect until further notice for the Rock River at Joslin, Illinois for moderate flooding. River levels are not expected to change appreciably over the next week, however ice jam activity may cause local stage fluctuations.  Extensive minor flooding will continue through the week along the major rivers in western and southern Indiana.

Northeast:
Moderate river flooding is occurring and will continue for the Housatonic River at Gaylordsville, Connecticut.  The river is forecast to crest by Tuesday, March 11, 2008, and then begin falling slowly. Flood Warnings are extended for the Susquehanna River and East Branch of the Delaware River in New York and Pennsylvania. Minor to moderate flooding is anticipated; however, these rivers should fall below flood stage by Tuesday, March 11, 2008.

South/Southeast:
The White River, Arkansas is at minor flood stage and is forecast to continue to rise, cresting Friday, March 14, 2008. Flood Warnings for minor flooding remain in effect for rivers across the region; most are forecast to remain in effect through Tuesday, March 11, 2008. (NWS, FEMA Regions I, II, IV, and V)
