Severe Weather West and Midwest

CA Severe Weather
The Southern REOC is activated through Tuesday, January 29, 2008; no requests for assistance have been received.  Two mudslides in the Poomacha Burn Area are hampering access to approximately 500 Pauma Band of Indians Tribal members.  Both mudslides are expected to be cleared Tuesday, January 29, 2008. 

Orange County evacuations, both mandatory and voluntary, were lifted at 9:00 a.m. January, 27, 2008.  Three shelters open; two in Santa Barbara County and one in Orange County; no population numbers reported.  Santa Cruz OES reported a landslide occurred may take 24 to 48 hours to clear the slide, depending on the weather.

Region IX is monitoring the weather situation and will respond as needed.  No request for Federal Assistance has been received. (CA OES Daily Situation Report, January 28, 2008)

AZ Flooding
Heavy rains caused flooding northeast of Phoenix, AZ Monday, January 28, 2008, power outages, evacuations and a shelter was opened.  Rains have ended, power has been restored, evacuations lifted and the shelter was closed.  No request for Federal Assistance is expected. (Region IX Incident Report)

Midwest Flooding Update
Scattered rain showers are expected to continue Tuesday, January 29, 2008 before a transition to all snow in the afternoon as a powerful cold front sweeps through the area.  Recent warming led to the rapid melting of the existing snowpack resulting in increased runoff.

Indiana:
Flood Warnings continue for the Kankakee River at Shelby, Indiana.  Minor flooding is occurring; is forecast to continue; and is forecasted to fall below flood stage February 3, 2008.
Illinois:
A Flood Warning remains in effect with possible ice jam flooding along the Kankakee (near Wilmington), Rock and the Illinois Rivers through late Wednesday night, January 31, 2008.
Wisconsin:
A Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice for Rock River at Afton, WI.  Minor flooding is occurring but river levels are falling. (FEMA Region V, NWS)
