Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).

Significant National Weather

Midwest:  Saturday morning, January 19, 2008, will be cold, with temperatures in the minus-20s across North Dakota and Minnesota, and some wind chills to minus-45 degrees.

Northeast:  Colder air will move in Saturday night, January 19, 2008 and, by Sunday, January 20, 2008, highs will be in the teens and 20s, some 10-to-20 degrees below average.

Lake-effect snows will cause locally heavy accumulations downwind of Erie, PA, and Ontario, Canada.

South:  By Saturday morning, January 19, 2008, snow will fall across Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.  Snowfall accumulations from one-to-four-inches are possible from Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia, to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Rain will fall Saturday, January 19, 2008, Florida to North Carolina, and will be locally heavy.

Much colder air and a final burst of snow will be drawn into the region behind the storm on gusty northwest winds.  Any standing water or slush left behind on untreated roadways later Saturday night, January 19, 2008, is expected to freeze.  (NWS, Media Sources)

Earthquake Activity

On Thursday, January 17, 2008, at 11:28 p.m. AHST (Friday, January 18, 2008 at 4:28 a.m. EST), a 4.9 earthquake struck the Andreanoff Islands, about 106 miles west of Adak, Alaska, at a depth of 17.5 miles.  No reports of damage or injuries, and no tsunami was generated. (USGS/NEIC, West Coast & Alaska Tsunami Warning Center)
