Description 8 p.; References
Abstract Recently, owing to the increase of marine traffic and marine structures, such as bridge piers in navigable waters, ship collision accidents with the structures have been increasing. The collapse accidents of the Tasman Bridge of Australia in 1975, the Tjorn Bridge of Sweden in 1980 and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge of U.S.A. in 1980 were brought about by ship collisions. In this paper, a bridge pier is considered as one of the examples of marine structures. Initially, information on several cases of ship collision with bridges was collected from the report of Japan Association for Preventing Marine Accidents, Lloyd's Casualty Reports and so on. From these data, several characteristics of ship collision accidents were pointed out. Next, the analytical and experimental studies on the behaviors of a ship subjected to a current or wind around the bridge pier were described. Danger zones for a navigating or drifting ship were also indicated. Finally, the rope system protective device, which is useful in preventing small-sized ship collisions, was investigated.
