Abstract |
Twenty-two transportation professionals from the United States participated in a 2-week study tour of Europe's Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS). The tour was sponsored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and took place on October 28 through November 8, 1991. Tour participants visited four countries, 10 cities, and over 20 IVHS sites. Participants viewed first-hand various European systems for traffic management, traveler information, vehicle control, and public transportation. Dialogue with experts in these European countries and discussions with others participating in the tour provided tour participants with an understanding of research, planning, operations, institutional, and funding issues. The tour group included representatives from federal, state, and local government agencies, transportation consultants, universities, associations, electronics and communications firms, and the defense industry. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provided assistance for four representatives of state and local agencies to participate. This Participants' Report summarizes the general observations made by the tour participants and presents the reports prepared by the four participants who received FHWA scholarships. |
