Abstract This paper recounts the history of transportation planning in the province of Ontario, to provide a context for the current approach. It describes in detail, the study design for an area network study currently underway in the Niagara Peninsula area of southern Ontario. This study is being conducted using a broad, consultative approach incorporating the views of the general public and all affected stakeholders. The study represents the first attempt by the province to address and integrate all its strategic objectives through a comprehensive transportation plan. Specific transportation issues in the area include highway expansion needs, international border crossing capacity, expansion of commuter rail networks and integration of existing municipal transit systems.
