Abstract Pedestrians ages 65 and older are two to four times more likely to die than younger people when struck by automobiles according to a study conducted by the UNC Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC). This study involved analyzing 10 years of data and more than 70,000 cases from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS). To support and compare their national findings, HSRC researchers also examined more than 26,000 North Carolina crashes resulting in pedestrian injuries and deaths occurring between January 1980 and December 1990. HSRC conducted the study in cooperation with the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center through funding from the Centers for Disease Control.
