Awards and Recognition

The following awards are sponsored by the AHA.

AHA Leadership Awards
AHA Leadership Awards include the Distinguished Service Award, Award of Honor, Justin Ford Kimball Innovators Award, Board of Trustees Award, and Honorary Life Membership. Awards are presented in April at AHA's Annual Meeting in Washington D.C.

AHA-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize
An American Hospital Association Award supported by grants from McKesson Corporation and the McKesson Foundation, the award honors hospital leadership and innovation in quality, safety, and commitment to patient care. The award winner receives $75,000 and two finalists receive $12,500 each.

AHA NOVA Awards
AHA NOVA Awards honor effective, collaborative programs focused on improving community health status. 

Carolyn Boone Lewis Living the Vision Awards
The Carolyn Boone Lewis Living the Vision Awards are presented to organizations and individuals living AHA’s vision of “a society of healthy communities where all individuals reach their highest potential for health.”

Circle of Life Award
The AHA Circle of Life Award honors innovative programs in palliative and end-of-life care.  The 2009 award is supported, in part, by the California Healthcare Foundation, based in Oakland, California, and by the Archstone Foundation.  Major sponsors of these awards are the American Hospital Association, the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, the Catholic Health Association, and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization & National Hospice Foundation; the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association are Circle of Life cosponsors.  Other sponsors will be named shortly.

Foster G. McGaw Prize for Excellence in Community Service
The winners and finalists of the Foster G. McGaw Prize collectively paint a picture of creative, insightful, caring health delivery organizations that are exceptionally committed to improving the health and well-being of everyone in their communities. The Baxter International Foundation, the Cardinal Health Foundation and the American Hospital Association sponsor the  Foster G. McGaw Prize.

Hospital Awards For Volunteer Excellence
The Hospital Awards for Volunteer Excellence (HAVE) program was established by the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees to help hospitals attract and retain volunteers by recognizing outstanding contributions of organized programs of volunteer service.

Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E)
The Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) Program, a joint program of the AHA, American Nurses Association, U.S. EPA and Health Care Without Harm, grants three awards:

  • The H2E Partners for Change Award tor facilities that have made significant progress reducing waste, preventing pollution and eliminating mercury.
  • The H2E Environmental Leadership Award to facilities that have active, ongoing waste and mercury-use reduction programs and are setting the "industry standard" for environmental policies at other hospitals.
  • The H2E Champion Award recognizes supporters' efforts to promote the H2E program among healthcare facilities, to recruit new H2E partners and to support and promote H2E goals within their own organizations.

Shirley Ann Munroe Leadership Development Award
The Shirley Ann Munroe Leadership Development Award recognizes small or rural hospital chief executives and administrators who have achieved improvements in local health delivery and health status through their leadership and direction.
