Abstract The North Front Range Transportation Alternatives Feasibility Study (NFRTAFS) was a Major Investment Study sponsored by four public agencies the Colorado Department of Transportation; the North Front Range Transportation and Air Quality Planning Council; the Upper Front Range Regional Planning Commission; and the Denver Regional Council of Governments. The studys purpose was to develop regional solutions to safety problems, traffic congestion, air quality issues, and mobility problems between the northern Colorado population centers and the Denver metropolitan area. The study area for the NFRTAFS extended approximately 60 miles from the Denver metropolitan area to Fort Collins and included other north front range population centers in between. The width of the corridor varied but generally extended from the foothills on the west to US 85 and DIA on the east, with I-25 forming the spine of the study area. The primary focus of the NFRTAFS was on north-south travel between the major population centers in the study area. The population is projected to increase in the study area of 43% by 2020. Several communities are presently nonattainment areas for carbon monoxide and PM-10. The study found no significant inter-regional transit services exist in the study area. Solutions recommended by this study were aimed at falling within projected funding constraints and at sensitivity to community needs and environmental regulations. Possible alternatives include highway capacity improvements, intercity passenger rail alignments and technologies, bus system improvements, and other modal options. This website explain the process the Policy and Oversight Committee utilized in formulating its recommended solutions. The site presents the results of surveys taken as part of the data and opinion collection process. The technical reports are also posted online. The executive summary of the final report and recommendations is available as a PDF file (26 p.; 1.6 Mb) with provision on the site for citizen comments.
