Frequently Asked Questions
L. Can a signature line be left blank on a filing?
Q: L. Can a signature line be left blank on a filing?
A: Any filing with the Commission must be signed (18 C.F.R. 385.2005(a)(1)). For electronic filing, we clarified that requirement in 385.2005(c) to state “In the case of any document filed in electronic form…, the typed characters representing the name of a person shall be sufficient to show that such person has signed the document for the purposes of this section.”

Some people key “/s/ (name)” on the signature line, others leave it blank. We have an audit trail for eFiling that identifies the submitter and the person responsible for the filing. So it not necessary to include a scanned image solely for the purpose of showing a “pen and ink” signature.
