Passes & Permits

Before you plan an activity on the Forest, please be sure to check whether or not you need a permit or pass. The following lists all permits and their activities.

Recreation Passes & Permits
Many recreation sites on the Forest require a permit or pass. Required permits and passes are listed for each site in the Tripplanning section. Find out what pass you need for an activity and how to obtain it.

Sno-park Permit
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) requires this permit to park at many snow covered recreation sites from November 15 through April 30.

Off Highway Vehicle Permit
An off-highway vehicle permit is required by the State of Oregon if you want to operate your off-highway vehicle on public land. The State establishes and administers OHV permits and regulations.

Special Forest Products Permit
This permit is required whenever you plan to sell forest products. Also, some products are rare enough or in high enough demand that they also require a permit. Special Forest products include floral greenery, mushrooms, transplants (trees, shrubs or herbaceous plants), cones, medicinal plants, cuttings, herbs, nuts, berries, decorative wood, pitch, Christmas trees and boughs, and rocks. (For more information on what special products are, visit the forest products page.) If you are unsure whether you need a special forest products permit, please contact us.

Special Use Permit
A special use permit is required when you are asking for special privileges on National Forest land. Examples include gatherings of 75 people or more, operating a business, using the Forest for financial gain, and commercial filming. If you are unsure whether you need a special use permit, please contact us.

Firewood Permit
When firewood is available, this firewood permit is required for gathering firewood for personal use. Availability and procedures for collecting vary by Ranger District.

Road Use Permits
Using a National Forest System Road (NFSR) for commercial hauling requires a permit or written authorization. Find out more here.
