OHV ~ Santiam Pass Recreation Area

Santiam Pass Summer Motorized Recreation Area

Summer Motorized Use Season:
When the area is free of snow, usually the mid-June until mid-November.

Summer Riding Rules:

  • Some routes may be closed during extreme fire danger periods in August and September. Please check our Fire Section for current conditions.
  • Currently, Class I, II, and III OHVs can ride on designated roads. All roads in the Santiam Pass area are open to OHV use unless posted closed to motorized traffic. Remember -- the Pacific Crest Trail is closed to all motorized traffic!
  • All vehicles must have a valid Oregon OHV permit and obey all State of Oregon riding rules. Please check our Rules for Riding section for details.

Santiam Pass Dispersed Motorized Recreation Area Project:
Planning is underway to designate a system of roads and trails open to OHVs during summer months. Track progress of this project from our forest planning section.

Santiam Pass Winter Recreation Area

Winter Sports Season:
November 15 to April 15 (corresponds to SnoPark permit links offsiteseason).

Winter Riding Rules:

  • During winter sports season, Santiam Pass is open to snowmobiles (vehicle that uses an endless belt tread for propulsion, and steered wholly or in part with skis or sled type runners) and Class I OHV/ATVs. These are 50 inches or less, under 800 pounds and include quads and three-wheelers.

    The Winter Trip Planning Guide has information about winter recreation areas on the Willamette National Forest.

    Riders may use designated motorized routes, marked with orange diamonds, and may travel cross-country.
  • Yield to non-motorized users in shared corridors, and watch for skiers at trail crossings
  • Forest roads that are designated winter travel routes are closed during winter sports season to Class II and III OHV (motorcycles and 4x4s over 50 inches over 800 pounds)
  • All vehicles must have current Oregon OHV or snowmobile registration.
