Natural Resources

The Forest Service focuses on a full range of values, from experiencing outdoor wonders to exploring the treasures of our national heritage.  However we use our national forests and grasslands, the key is protecting and restoring the long-term health of the land for future generations.

Forest Health InitiativeFOREST HEALTH INIATIVE
The Healthy Forests Initiative for Wildfire Prevention and Stronger Communities - This initiative calls for administrative improvements that ensure more timely decisions, greater efficiency, and better results in projects that reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires and restore forest and rangeland health.

CONSERVATION EDUCATION
Conservation education programs are strong elements of the Forest Service mission, vision and guiding principles. These programs offer the American public opportunities to better understand forest ecosystems and the active role they play in the future of these systems. As human relationships with the environment become increasingly complex, people look to the Forest Service for a better understanding of their natural world and shared participation in managing natural resources. more>>

GEOLOGY & MINERALS
The geology of the National Forests and Grasslands in the Southwestern Region is one of the main attractions for the multitude of recreational visitors who come to enjoy the unique natural beauty of the southwestern landscapes. The back-drop of red sandstone mesas, black volcanic buttes, glaciated mountain ranges, dramatic canyon lands, remote caves, and historic mining ghost towns make the Southwestern National Forests an exciting place to study geology and minerals. more>>

FOREST HEALTH
The Southwestern Region provides assistance and expertise to Federal, State, Tribal and private land managers in Arizona and New Mexico concerning forest health conditions and issues. Annual survey flights are conducted to monitor forest health with an emphasis on detecting insect and disease activity. Advice and support is provided for projects to help prevent or suppress insect and disease outbreaks. Additionally we produce publications on insects, diseases and other forest health related issues. more>>
