Nonpopulation Census Records: Virginia

Updated April 16, 2007

Nonpopulation census schedules for Virginia are reproduced in nine NARA microfilm publications listed below.

1820-1880
M279. Records of the 1820 Census of Manufactures (27 rolls). Roll 18 contains Virginia.

M1808. Eighth Census of the United States for the Northern District of Halifax County, Virginia, 1860: Schedules of Free Inhabitants, Slave Inhabitants, Mortality, Agriculture, Industry, and Social Statistics (1 roll) reproduces original schedules held by the Duke University Library, which may have been a "rough draft" kept by Assistant Marshal John H. Taylor. The major difference between M1808 and T1132 in the mortality schedules: (1) M1808 indicates the slave owner's surname for each deceased slave; T1132 merely indicates the slave's first name; and (2) M1808 gives each slave's occupation as "slave" while T1132 indicates each slave's specific position (field hand, house servant, miller, etc.).
