GARY K. DAVIS TO HEAD NOAA'S SATELLITE OPERATIONS

Gary K. Davis has been named director of satellite operations at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Davis is responsible for the operation of several NOAA facilities at the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. These include the Satellite Operations Control Center in Suitland, Md., and the Command and Data Acquisition Stations at Wallops, Va., and Fairbanks, Alaska.

"I am looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead," Davis said. "Satellite operations are always exciting. With the second advanced geostationary satellite launched earlier this week, we're entering a new era in weather forecasting technology."

Davis has been with NOAA for 19 years. He has been a mainstay in the geostationary operational environmental satellite (GOES) program and was instrumental in ensuring that the nation's first geostationary environmental satellite, GOES-8, met its launch date of April 13, 1994.

Davis received a B.S. degree in mathematics in 1975 and a B.S. degree in engineering in 1976 from the University of Maryland. He lives in New Carrollton, Md., with his wife Monecia, and their children Kelly, 16, and Andrew, 14.
