American-pattern files mainly consist of machinist's files and mill or saw files. Machinists files are used where metal must be removed rapidly and finish is of secondary importance. Mill or saw files are suitable for the following tasks: sharpening mill or circular saws and large crosscut saws; lathe work; draw filing; filing brass and bronze; smooth general filing. These files are characterized by hardened, uniform teeth and conventional tang for attaching a wooden handle. Forged from carbon alloy steel. The three standard tooth cuts available on American-pattern files are as follows: bastard-cut (coarse teeth for rapid stock removal); second-cut (medium teeth for moderate stock removal); smooth-cut (fine teeth for smooth finishes).
