About NCICB > What is the NCICB?

Cancer Affects All of Our Lives
According to the American Cancer Society, one in four deaths in the United States is attributable to cancer, and one in three Americans will eventually develop some form of cancer.
The Skyrocketing Cost of Cancer
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimated overall annual costs for cancer in 2002 to be $189.5 billion.

Since 2001, the National Cancer Institute Center for Bioinformatics (NCICB) has been advancing the mission of the Unites States National Cancer Institute (NCI) to accelerate cancer discovery, development and delivery, and eliminate suffering and death from cancer. The NCICB is dedicated to providing foundational informatics infrastructure, tools and applications to the biomedical research and health communities to facilitate cancer research and care.

We provide valuable bioinformatics support and integration services to NCI research initiatives. Consistent models and comprehensive data are delivered in an accessible format for administrators and researchers. This helps leverage the breadth of information gathered by the basic and clinical cancer research communities.

Working in partnership with academia, other Federal Agencies, the private sector and patient advocacy groups, the NCICB champions the critical role of biomedical informatics within the cancer enterprise. Our biomedical informatics infrastructure, tools, applications and data are accessible, standards-based, unified and developed according to industry best practices.

You can be our partner, too. By participating in our new Open Development Initiative (ODI), you can help develop the next generation of NCICB applications and infrastructure. Click here for more.
