Welcome to the Beautiful Fort Apache Indian Reservation home to the White Mountain Apache Tribe. This reservation contains over 1.6 million acres of pristine land. We encourage you to be our guests and fish, camp and recreate. When using the Reservation for the first time, you may want to observe the following:

  1. You do not need State of Arizona permits for Outdoor Recreation Activities on the Reservation. Arizona Hunting and Fishing regulations do not apply to Reservation lands.
  2. Reservation permits are required for all Outdoor Activities including fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, river rafting, sightseeing, picnicking, biking, and cross country skiing.
  3. Please get your permits before or immediately after entering the Reservation. Permits are easily obtainable from permit dealers and Reservation marinas.
  4. Feel free to recreate on all areas of the Reservation that are not "Designated Closed Areas" (see Map). Please obey all signs that you may encounter, what the signs mean are:
     
    1. CLOSED AREA: This area is closed to all entry.
    2. ROAD CLOSED: This area is closed to vehicles to prevent erosion but may entered on foot.
    3. SPECIAL PERMIT REQUIRED: These areas are being managed to restrict access and provide a quality experience. You must receive and obtain a special permit before entering this area.

BIG CHANGES THIS YEAR

  2008-09 Tribal Member Hunting Regulations
  • West End General Archery, Archery Raghorn and Depredation tag holders may also purchase an Elk Season - Turkey Combination tag.  See Section G6.8 for detail.
  • The Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep hunt has been reinstated.
  • The price of the Spring Gobbler hunt has been reduced to $1,650.00
  • Camping is now allowed in certain areas for the West End self-guided elk hunts.  Maps will be available at the W&ORD office in Whiteriver.
 
 

TRIBAL MEMBER HUNTING BIG CHANGES THIS YEAR

  • The Whitetail Deer Season has been split into a General Season and a Trophy Season.  The General Season tags will be available over the counter and the Trophy Season tags will be issued through a draw.

  • The number of Zone 1 Mule Deer tags has been reduced from 40 to 35.  The number of Zone 2 Mule Deer tags has been reduced from 80 to 70.  The number of Zone 3B Mule Deer tags has been reduced from 45 to 40.

  • Unit 8 Trophy Bull - Archery applicants must complete a mandatory 4-hour W&ORD Archery Hunter Education Course and be able to demonstrate basic archery proficiency in order to be eligible for the special draw for this hunt.

  • A Special Bull Elk Season has been instituted October 7-13, 2008

  • The Late Elk Season has been reinstated on the West End.

  • The Bighorn Sheep Season has been reinstated.

  • The Spring Gobbler hunt has been extended.

  • The minimum legal caliber for Elk is .270.

  • Tribal Member draw-hunt application will be available on-line at www.wmatoutdoors.org, beginning late mid-July.

  • W&ORD staff will be in Cibecue at the community complex conference room once a week, every Wednesday from 10 am to 3 pm, beginning July 30, 2008 to accept draw hunt application.
