VA Plumbing Supervisor Convicted in Kickback Scheme
John McDermott, Special Agent in Charge, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Inspector General (OIG), announced today that in United States District Court, in the Eastern District of Louisiana, located in New Orleans, LA, Danny L. Moore pleaded guilty to charges of both Conspiracy to accept a Bribe and Bribery.

McDermott stated that the Indictment of Moore resulted from an investigation by his New Orleans, LA, Resident Office. Moore, a Plumbing Supervisor at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans, LA (VAMC), engaged in a scheme to inflate and falsify purchase orders for both emergency and routine plumbing repairs at the VAMC. For approximately a three (3) year period, Moore and at least two contractors overcharged the VAMC more than $80,000.00. Moore is believed to have received at least this amount in kickbacks demanded by him from these two contractors in order to obtain contracts to work at the VAMC.

The two contractors previously pled guilty to similar charges and assisted the Government in the prosecution of Moore. The three defendants are expected to be sentenced in June 2004.

Assistant United States Attorney Tony Sanders, New Orleans, LA, is prosecuting the case.
