We will work on dentiforms and on other course participants with the state-of-the art Piezoelectric scalers or Cavitron ultrasonic scalers. New oral hygiene adjuncts will also be covered. The course will have a strong clinical emphasis. In addition, we will review the Indian Health Service [IHS] and American Dental Association [ADA] periodontal procedure codes.

According to PL 97-35, the initial certification of competency in Dental Radiology involves two components:
1. Written Evaluation: "A criterion-reference test designed to measure knowledge and functional capability essential for making diagnostically acceptable radiographic surveys with minimal risk to the patient and the operator."
2. Clinical Evaluation: "The written examination is supplemented as necessary with a clinical examination." Demonstration of clinical proficiency means meeting the minimum standards in Infection control, radiology protection, quality of radiographs and presentation of radiographs.

The radiology certification process is intended to be accomplished at the dental auxiliarys facility under the guidance of the supervising dentist.
Dental auxiliaries who are currently certified by the Dental Assisting National Board [DANB] or hold a State radiology certificate, are exempt from taking the written evaluation.

This course is the online version of the written exam.
Upon successful completion [a grade of 80 or higher] on the online exam and the completion of the clinical portion of the radiology certification process, the dental auxiliary will receive a certificate of competency in radiology.

To complete the online clinical portion of the radiology exam process, the supervisor must enter the clinical evaluations online in the dental directory. Go to the Assistants listing in the directory and use the drop down menu under their name to select "Add Radiology Clinical Eval" which will present the evaluation entering screen.

It is recommended that dental auxiliaries study the IHS Radiological Health and Safety workbook. The study guide includes information on radiological protection, quality of radiographs, radiograpic and processing techniques, presentation of radiographs, infection control and special radiological techniques. Additionally, the study guide includes a glossary, certification requirements, technical quality of care standards, and clinical criteria of evaluation. The study guide also includes self-evaluation quizes.

An electronic version of the study guide with self-evaluation quizes can be found on the dental portal www.doh.ihs.gov under the Clinic tab. Scroll down the menu under the Clinic tab and click on Radiology.

Over recent years, the number of medically compromised patients entering Indian Health Service Dental Clinics has been increasing. Many of these have urgent treatment needs where a delay in dental care could pose a serious health threat. This short half-day presentation will cover risk assessment and ethical considerations when providing dental treatment for adult patients with a wide variety of medical issues including heart and circulatory diseases, liver diseases, respiratory diseases, renal diseases, pregnancy, bisphosphonate therapy, diabetes, bleeding disorders, organ transplantation, cancer, and thyroid diseases.

Course is available to dentists and dental hygienists only.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

1. Determine when consultation with the patient's primary care provider is indicated.
2. Understand risks associated with certain medical conditions and when further tests or evaluation are needed.
3. Understand different treatment options to consider for medically compromised patients.

This one-hour conference call is offered to all staff in the Nashville Area.

When should the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) be done? What are the most current classifications for periodontal disease? How can I more effectively treatment plan patients with periodontal disease? When should perio patients be recalled? These are among the many questions dental professionals have in the day-to-day management of patients with periodontal disease. This presentation is part of a three-part series on periodontal disease over the next 3 months.

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to:

1. Discuss the evidence supporting the frequency of periodontal recalls and the importance of patient self-care.
2. Discuss the medico-legal implications related to periodontal disease management.
3. Identify two surgical techniques that can be employed by general dentists to effectively treat most periodontal patients in an IHS setting.

Participants will learn techniques for person-to-person delivery of oral health education and instruction. The course content will include discussion of the dental caries and periodontal health processes and the utilization of oral health aides to improve oral health status. Career development and professional progression will also be discussed.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
1. Gain a better understanding of CDC guidelines as it relates to dental programs including dental sealant application, radiology and infection control.
2. Increase awareness of the dental caries and periodontal health processes and utilization of oral health aides to improve oral health status.
3. Recognize oral health to be an integral part of a person’s overall general health.

Radiographic and sealant application experience helpful but not necessary.

Medically complex dental patients comprise a broad range of adults and children with physical, emotional and medical problems. Many of these patients require special diagnostic tests and consultations with medical specialists which may result in treatment modifications. This course will address common medical conditions and oral health scenarios. Mock health histories and radiographs will be available for group discussion. The lectures and discussions will include but not be limited to the cardiac, respiratory, neurological and hepatic systems. Also included will be scenarios for a variety of treatment situations, s such as for patients undergoing chemotherapy or preparing for organ transplantation, as well as for the dental treatment of the routine or medically complex child.

Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
1. Understand the basic physiology of common medical conditions.
2. Determine when a consultation or referral is indicated.
3. Understand if and when dental treatment modifications are indicated.

The curriculum provides oral health professionals (dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants) with information to ensure that young children with special health care needs have access to health-promotion and disease-prevention services that address their unique oral health needs in a comprehensive, family-centered, and community-based manner. Module titles are as follows: (1) An Overview of Children with Special Health Care Needs and Oral Health, (2) Providing Optimal Oral Health Care, (3) Oral Health Supervision, (4) Prevention of Oral Disease, and (5) Behavior Management.

The Web-based curriculum was prepared by the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center at Georgetown University and designed by the Center for Advanced Distance Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Curriculum content was adapted from the Planning Guide for Dental Professionals Serving Children with Special Health Care Needs, prepared by the University of Southern California, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Development of the planning guide and the CE course was supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to be:
1. Aware and responsive to the oral health unique requirements for young children with special health care needs.
2. Develop family-centered preventive programs for young children with special health care needs.
3. Proficient in managing oral health behaviors for young children with special health care needs.

THIS ONLINE COURSE IS FOR CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION PURPOSES. IT DOES NOT SUBSTITUTE FOR THE IHS RADIOLOGY CERTIFICATION.

A training DVD has been developed for new dental clinicians as well as dental clinicians who are currently working in the dental profession. The purpose for new dental personnel is to introduce radiology equipment, discuss the concepts of how to obtain quality radiographs and demonstrate techniques for achieving ideal, diagnostic radiographs. Current dental personnel can use the information as a general review and to update and enhance current techniques being utilized by the clinic staff.

This DVD can be viewed in its entirety or each individual section accessed separately as needed to improve technique skills or review a specific concept in dental radiology. It also is a good complementary resource for the IHS textbook, Radiological Health and Safety. The DVD is divided into five major areas of training:

Section 1. Radiology Equipment.
Section 2. Radiographic Techniques.
Section 3. Processing Radiographs.
Section 4. Specialized Techniques.
Section 5. Infection Control.

After review of this DVD and completion of the post-test the clinician will be able to:

1. Identify components of radiology equipment.
2. Demonstrate proper radiation safety procedures when exposing radiographs.
3. Practice appropriate techniques for placement of patient, film, and x-ray equipment when exposing periapical and bitewing radiographs.
4. Identify common errors that result in a loss of diagnostic quality for intra-oral and panoramic radiographs and how to correct for these errors.
5. Describe how to process radiographs using an automatic processor.
6. Demonstrate proper techniques for placement of patient, film and x-ray equipment when taking Panoramic, Occlusal and Vertical Bitewing radiographs.

This two-hour presentation is intended to provide the very latest information on the prevention and management of dental caries and periodontal diseases. Both clinical and community-based interventions will be presented and the learning group will discuss the implementation of these interventions in their local communities. Furthermore, the presentation will review dental program GPRA objectives, ECC, the effects of pop on children’s health, and effective health education strategies.

1. List at least three modes of delivering fluoride.
2. Describe at least one strategy to recruit school-age children to the dental clinic for sealants.

Activity Overview:

Domestic violence is a health care problem of epidemic proportions. Oral health providers are in a pivotal position for identifying head, face, and neck injuries typical of domestic violence or child abuse. To raise awareness about this public health issue, the IHS, Division of Oral Health worked with Barbara Gabbert, PhD at the University of California San Francisco, Dental School. Dr. Gabbert developed the AVDR [Ask, Validate, Document, and Refer] program, and IHS, Division of Oral Health incorporated the AVDR DVD into this course.
